About JCSSI

The 'Joint Committee on Safety, Health & Environment in the Steel Industry' (JCSSI), formerly known as 'Standing Committee on Safety for the Steel Industry' (SCSSI) came into existence on 27th April, 1973 with the primary objective of safeguarding valuable human resource against possible hazards in steel industry.

JCSSI is a unique National level bipartite forum of management and trade union representatives from both the public and private sector steel companies. At present there are 22 Member organisations and 75 members in the committee which includes 4 committee executives, 4 expert members, 23 trade union representatives and 44 management representatives.

Ever since its inception, JCSSI activities have primarily concentrated in addressing the cause of safety, health and environment in steel industry. In its continual endeavor to further the cause of industrial safety, JCSSI instituted the ' Ispat Suraksha Puraskar ' to recognize safety performance of plants, specific operational zones and mines / collieries, which have been free from any fatal accident during a given time period. In addition, JCSSI annually organizes competitions on safety essays, calendar and poster design to generate and promote safety awareness amongst employees of member organisations. The winners of such competitions are also rewarded for motivating and encouraging them.

The secretarial functions of the committee are managed by SAIL Safety Organisation, Ranchi, a unit of Steel Authority of India Ltd.
